GAME plan week 2

Resources needed to carry out my GAME plan:
Students will need Internet access and a computer camera in order to use Skype and other video software to enhance their learning. A microphone and headset is also required for students to provide a supplemental resource for students to record their voices into the computer and hear themselves in order to improve their speaking fluency  and oral reading skills.
Students must have basic computer skills and have been exposed to Internet, email, and video chat etiquette. I need to obtain information on how to teach students to use this Internet etiquette and safety in their daily lives and in school. My plan is to assess the level of etiquette that my students already possess. The following website contains a quiz on netiquette that I would have my students take: http://www.bucks.edu/online/dlresources/etiquette.htm. After reading the results I can assess my classroom and see what they need improvement in.

  1. I like the plan of getting students to learn the basic computer skills and exposed to the internet. sometimes, we take for granted that all students know already how to use the computer and access the internet in a very safe manner. This plan will certianly prepare your students for the building of learning outcomes.

  2. Your plan is developing nicely. Your students will enjoy recording and listening to their productions. You can let them interview each other or recite poems or songs they compose to demonstrate their understanding of the content. The construtivists suggest to us that students learn best when they construct actifacs of their learning. Their recorded compostions can present an great opportunity for them to stimulate their creative thinking skills.

  3. The exposure to the Internet and email is good but I really like the fact that you are taking the time to make sure that your students understand netiquette. I know that my own students have a very difficult time acting in a professional manner whenever we try these kinds of activities, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that I have not taken the time to properly prepare them. I take for granted the fact that they "should" know how to act. Even with high school students, teachers cannot assume that. I am going to steal your ideas next time we try a video or wiki activity. Great idea!

  4. Hi Katie,
Skype is a valuable tool to develop a comfort level with--in addition to developing this knowledge your students will be furthering the development of their interpersonal skills, and getting more comfortable with their image and voice in a technology context.
I love your focus on netiquette. So often, people forget that the practices they use in traditional correspondence still apply. A friend tone to email, respect for privacy--to name just a few--are still so important--some students are so used to the IM that they forget to apply a polite framework to their emails.

    Thank you for sharing.

  5. Katie -
What age group will you use Skype with? Do you already have a classroom to connect with? I wouldn't even know where to begin or how to find another class. I have used Skype a little bit, but not enough to apply it in my classroom. Perhaps, students could help me learn how! I am interested to see how this turns out for you in the next few weeks! Good luck! I think your ideas are great!

  6. Thanks for all the encouragement! Azizeh Family: I currently teach in resource so I teach students from all grades at the elementary level. So planning a Skype meeting is tough because my students don't stay in my class the whole day. I have seen another teacher implement it with her class and it went very well. I will definitely have to time my project wisely and plan for technological problems that may arise.

  7. I like the fact that students will have the opportunity to improve their communication skills by using Skype. It is important that students understand how to express themselves both in person and online. You are preparing students with the skills that they will need to meet the 21st Century requirement and the workplace. I am very interested in how this is going to work, for I too would one day like to use Skype as a learning tool in my class

  8. What happens to the students who do not have computers at home? Is this will be a setback for them if it is only they will access the computers to practice their basic computer skills? Is there any other plan or method in place for these students? The goal or objective is to have all the students computer competencies at the same level right?
