GAME plan week 6

After reviewing my goals for my GAME plan in week 1, I have been reflecting on what I have learned so far from my course work to help me with obtaining my goals. One goal and concern I had was to promote and model digital etiquette. I have learned in my course readings and assignments that many digital tools are available to students and teachers to help promote this concern. For example some resources for email etiquette include:
http://livebinders.com/play/play_or_edit/6237, and a quiz students can take on email etiquette: http://www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/story.php?title=do-you-know-email-etiquette

I have also found a variety of resources in our text book, our videos, and from my classmates. I am discovering a variety of digital tools that I have never heard of from our class resources and classmates. My bookmarks are getting pretty full of all the resources.

I do feel comfortable to begin a new goal in order to grow as a professional: NETS-T performance indicator #5: Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership. One way I have been working towards this goal is to research professional conferences and meetings for educators from around the world to gain knowledge from other educators. An online conference is held each year called the "K-12 Conference" http://k12online.ning.com/. What I like about this resources is that if you missed the conference from the previous year it is all available for you to view online...they call it the conference that keeps going. My next idea is to join an educational organization where I can obtain the latest news and ideas in education. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions for any?

  1. It is indeed important to teach students about polite and safe communication on the internet. It also be a good idea to guide them to formaulate rules on internet use, similar to regular classroom rules. These rules should also be permanently displayed in the classroom.

I wish to encourage you to continue to engage in professional growth and leardership. Organising mini-workshops with colleagues is a good personal training grounds as well. I few weeks ago, I volunteered to make a presentation to a small rural school during their teacher professional day. The theme for my presentation was, Understanding the Brain and Classroom Instructions. The idea for the topic came from a course that I did earlier. For the talk, I used many of the skills that were taught during this program. I used powerPoint to support my presentation. I grew as a professional after that presentation.

  2. Thanks for the helpful websites. I particularly like the idea of the "K-12 Conference" workshop where teachers were able to view last year conference. To address your questions, The National Education Association (NEA) is the largest professional organization and largest labor union in the United States representing public school teachers and other support personnel, faculty and staffers at colleges and universities, retired educators, and college students preparing to become teachers. Also, The Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) The Association (founded in 1981) is an international, educational and professional not-for profit organization dedicated to the advancement of the knowledge, theory, and quality of learning and teaching at all levels with information technology. I hope you will find this organization helpful in assisting you with improving your teaching practice.

  3. Hi Katie,
Are you a member of ISTE? That might be a nice way to stay connected--they will also send you really nice journals that are very valuable in keeping abreast of new technology.

I love the idea of online conferences--for so many of us, this is the only way we can attend--it is cost effective and can be a great way to network as well as gather new tools and approaches for our classroom.

    Thanks for sharing.

  4. Digital etiquette is so important for our students to understand. Many of my own students have a hard time working and responding in a professional manner whenever we use online collaboration tools. They tend to fall back into their own norms of social media practice and act in an inappropriate manner. One of my goals is to provide my students with tools like the ones you suggested in your post. I'm looking for things that can be beneficial to high school students, because they already think they know everything. Good luck on your new goals, also.

  5. I love the idea of taking a quiz on email etiquette for students.
So many conferences will become online, especially with budget cuts. I use www.proteacher.com as a tool to search for ideas to bring into the classroom as well as ask questions on a variety of topic. They have a blog as well. This particular one is a blog.
    Thanks for sharing,
